Externally Set Exam: Paper
Paper can be the subject of the photograph and the material from which it is made. Jerry Reed and Ion Zupcu have taken photographs of paper constructions and used the careful control of lighting and shadow to explore monotone compositions. Aaron Siskind used the camera to record the textures and tones of form and damaged paper posters found on the walls of buildings. Abigail Reynolds and Aldo Tolino layer, rip, cut, fold and occasionally combine photographs to form paper three-dimensional relief images.
My choice
I have chosen to do the question on paper as I think that this is a theme that I have not discovered before and its a topic where I think that I can be imaginative, creative and I can experiment and play with a variety of materials. I chose paper because I think that you can use it to your advantage as you can manipulate it and add effects to it to make it look they you want it to.
Jerry Reed
Jerry Reed is a British photographer and he photographs in Black and White. The shapes in his photographs are very sharp and pointy and they look like geometric shapes. He uses light in his pictures to create shadows, illusion and depth. In some of his photographs, he repeats the same shapes creating patterns. There is a lot of contrast in the photographs and you can see the texture of the paper.
Ion Zupcu
Ion Zupcu was born in Romania in 1960. He photographs in colour. The colours in his photographs are mostly the same but he uses the coloured paper to create shapes. The colours are very vibrant. The foreground is in focus but the background is not. The colour red highlights the shapes. In some of the photographs, the shapes are flipped over. You can see that there is space between the foreground and the background. The texture of the photographs looks smooth.
Aaron Siskind
Aaron Siskind was born in New York. He died in 1991. He photographed in Black and White. Some of his photographs are abstract.
Abigail Reynolds
Abigail Reynolds is a British Photographer. She lives in Cornwall. She has published books and has won awards for her work. Her work is mainly sculpture using newspapers and sheets from books. her work in a way is a little bit abstract. You could say that some of her pictures do tell a story as some of her pictures are old buildings so they might have some history to them.
Aldo Tolino
My first response
I wanted to make my first response quite simple.
for these photographs I decided to use the paper in a simple experiment just by using paper and the light from my phone in order to create light and shadows. As you can see in all of the photos I tried to get shadows in all of the pictures to try and get a nice effect with each picture. also I thought the shadows were different and not very common so I thought it would give the pictures a nice edge to them. I also tried moving around the images to get some different angles and perspectives from them and I also tried to move my flashlight to get the shadows to move in certain angles and to bring them out in each and every picture. I also tried moving the shapes on each top of each other so they would merge and I could get some really nice effects with the shadows. also Ion Zupcu inspired me to get his ideas and add my own personal twist to them.
next time I will video them to try and capture the shadows and the effects that each and every picture has on them as it will look a lot better if you can see the different shapes and angles in each and every image and to try and capture the shapes
